Free LLR Test Guide for India: Format, Passing Marks and How to Prepare (2026)
How the LLR test works
The learner licence test is a computer-based multiple-choice exam on traffic rules and road signs, held at your RTO or online through the Sarathi portal. You get 15 questions, each with a time limit of 30 seconds, and you must answer at least 9 correctly (60%) to pass. Some questions show a road sign picture. You cannot go back to an earlier question.
Who can apply: minimum age
You can apply for a licence for a gearless two-wheeler of up to 50 cc at 16 years. For a geared motorcycle or a car (light motor vehicle) you must be 18, and for a transport vehicle you must be 20.
After you pass: validity and the driving test
A learner licence is valid for 6 months. You can apply for the permanent licence (driving test) after 30 days, and within the validity of the learner licence. Until then, you must display an "L" sign on your vehicle and be accompanied by a licensed driver.
Documents you usually need
Generally an age proof, an address proof, passport-size photographs and a self-declaration of physical fitness. Applicants for transport vehicles or older applicants may need a medical certificate. Requirements can differ by state, so check the official Sarathi Parivahan portal for your RTO.
